Calli-Fun

Tips and Tricks

When first starting calligraphy use guidelines

Use plain smooth paper for practice

Use a piece of paper under your hand to stop smudging

Use a calligraphy Koki to begin with - it's easier and less messy

Jon a calligraphy class. It's fun and you will have the advantage of group encouragement

Calli-Tips

Use two pencils taped together to practice letters. You will find that the proportions and detail will help with the letterform.

Always clean nibs after use. Dry them carefully to avoid rust.

Try to have a nib older for each nib you use.

If possible have a set of nibs for ink and another for paint. This will ensure that when you use paint (water colour or gouache] for writing the colours are always 'pure'.

ABCDarians or Pangrams

Sentences that contain all the letters of the alphabet

The explorer was frozen in his big kayak after making queer discoveries
A quart jar of oil mixed with zinc oxide makes a very bright paint
Whenever the black fox jumped the squirrel gazed suspiciously
