After the excitement of the Festive Season, which we always spend in Johannesburg, we've reviewed the past year and and realise, once again, how very fortunate we have been.
With many trips to Rose Cottage in the eastern Free State during various seasons, David continues to enjoy the fine points of capturing the moment. Still 'on sabbatical' from lecturing and introducing guests to the beautiful countryside, we have enjoyed the quiet moments and contemplation of country life.
There have been many changes in Fouriesburg. David's dam is completely changed and very few photographers can get this image any more. The Craigs sold the inn and many new sandstone buildings have been built with coffee shops and restaurants which change owners almost as often as we go down. Some of the poplars and willows have been removed and with the drought, farmers have kept their lands fallow, which is a great concern for 2016.
Even our Edwardian old lady, Rose Cottage, has been repainted with roof and walls trim and ready for the new year. We enjoy spending time on the verandas sipping coffee or wine, depending on the time of day.
The area still charms with misty mornings and spectacular sunsets and we love our away time there.
As you may have heard, we had our best trip to the Masai Mara in 2015 and our guests could not believe their good fortune. With many crossings (we actually drove away from a few) and wonderful preditor sightings, our tenth tour could not have been more spectacular. Our Kenyan friends are as special as ever and treated us like family members.
We love to explore South Africa with its diverse and remarkable wildlife and landscapes, winelands and mountains. We visited the Kwa-Zulu Natal parks in October where we were fortunate to see many rhino and antelope and other interesting animals.
We start the 2016 with a trip to the Kalagadi Transfrontier Park and look forward to wild wilderness camps (last year we showered with two lions lying under the bush just meters away from our bungalow), wide open skies and exceptional photographic opportunites.
We also look forward to our tour to Zambia in June-July 2016. We have a special group of guests joining us and look forward to many magical moments.
May 2016 be a good year filled with perfect light and the subject matter of your dreams.
